Discussion of outcomes informed care in the treatment of stuttering and fluency disorders

This discussion thread was created as a follow-up to the session on the evidence for therapist effects at the annual convention of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association in Miami Beach, November 15-18, 2006.

I attended the recent ASHA conference as the invited guest speaker for the Division of Fluency and Fluency Disorders, where I presented findings on Common_factors_and_therapist_effects.

I was excited to learn about the commonalities between the research on treatment outcomes for fluency disorders such as stuttering and psychotherapy outcomes research. Both fields have been actively pursuing identification and implementation of evidence based practices without having adequately accounted for the impact of therapist effects.

I am grateful for the reception I received and thrilled to have met so many inquisitive and passionate practitioners and researchers. I realize that we have much in common and I hope we'll have the opportunity to collaborate to explore the application of outcomes informed care to the treatment of stuttering and other speech disorders.
